Who is God to me?

I cannot confine God to a formula. Each religious tradition uses its own language, and each person approaches the mystery through their history, faith and experience.

Within the path I have studied, God is presented as the supreme spiritual reality and as a presence with whom I can enter into a relationship. Prayer allows me to express a need, gratitude or longing. Meditation adds silence and attention, and invites me to listen without demanding an immediate answer.

For me, belief in God should not separate me from everyday life. Faith needs to be reflected in conduct: in the way I speak, in the ability to forgive, in responsibility, respect and the practical help I offer to the person who needs it.

Faith, experience and doubt

Doubt is not always an enemy of faith. At times it makes me reconsider an idea that is too simple and leads towards a more honest understanding. I do not believe it is necessary to pretend to possess a certainty that I do not have. I can ask, study and wait without abandoning the search.

Nor do I consider it right to use God as a quick explanation for everything that happens. Suffering, injustice, illness and death raise profound questions. In their presence, a humble answer may be more truthful than a categorical statement.

I believe that the search for God should bear recognisable fruit: greater inner peace, love, clarity, compassion and responsibility. If a belief feeds contempt, superiority or fear, it is wise to examine how it is being understood and applied.

If you wish to begin this search, you may do so with a simple question: “God, if you are present, help me to know you and to live with greater love”.

Then remain silent for a few minutes. Do not look for an extraordinary sensation. Observe calmly and allow the answer to become visible also in the way you live.
