Asking what I have come here to do does not mean that I possess a complete answer. It means that I do not wish to live automatically. I want to understand my responsibility and the meaning I can give to the time I have been granted.
I have come to know myself sincerely, to discover the presence of God and to learn to love. I have come to develop the qualities that still need to grow within me: patience, understanding, courage, humility and service.
This purpose does not require me to abandon everyday life. It is fulfilled in a conversation, in work done well, in caring for the body, in the way I face a difficulty and in help offered without seeking recognition.
Learning to love
Love does not consist only in feeling affection. It also means listening, respecting another person’s freedom, fulfilling a responsibility and avoiding harm. At times it requires me to draw closer; at other times it requires me to establish a just boundary.
Spiritual life loses its meaning if it does not improve my relationship with the person before me. Prayer and meditation should lead to more conscious conduct, not to an indifferent separation from the world.
Growing through experience
Every situation can show me something about myself. Success reveals how I use what I receive. Difficulty shows my patience and my ability to ask for help. An error invites me to acknowledge it, repair it and learn.
Not all suffering should be interpreted as a lesson sent by God. There is pain caused by illness, injustice, violence or a circumstance that requires protection and professional help. Spirituality must not be used to blame the person who suffers or to justify what can be corrected.
My provisional answer
Today I would answer in this way: I have come to know myself, to seek God, to learn to love and to serve with the means available to me. This answer does not close the question. It gives me a direction in which to live it each day.
